On the Hunt for Pokemon: Understanding Biological Concepts using Pokemon Go™

Participant will use data collected via the Pokemon Go™ App to explore community and population level metrics. Using the App as a tool, participants will examine the biological concepts of species richness and diversity, habitat specificity, and species area relationships. This is also a great tool for teaching students how to develop data sets and to extrapolate meaning for tables, charts, and graphs.

Important Session Information:

Each participant will need to download the free Pokemon Go™ app to their own smart device.  Registered participants please complete the following assignment prior to the session. Collect Pokemon from your own area/neighborhood on 5 different days in approximately the same area and for the same amount of time each collection.
Steps:
1. use app to capture a Pokemon
2. take a screenshot of that Pokemon’s data card before closing it and capturing another Pokemon
3. bring the stored data cards with you when you come to the session (bring your device cord so that the data can be downloaded)
