Toxic Stress: How Grief and Trauma affect Students, K-12
Blended Session
Share
It can be challenging to work with children who have experienced stress and trauma, and it is vital that educators are able to understand and be responsive to the needs of these students. Trauma is the emotional, psychological, and physiological residue left over from heightened levels of toxic stress that accompanies experiences of danger, extreme poverty, violence, significant loss, and life-threatening events. What happens in early childhood can matter for a lifetime. To successfully manage our society's future, we must recognize problems and address them before they get worse. Research has shown how prolonged exposure to these stressors can weaken developing brain architecture and permanently set the body's stress response system on high alert. This session will share the science behind trauma and toxic stress and strategies for supporting students in your classroom.
