Unexpected events and situations are present on school campuses every day. Regardless of whether the response to them is somewhat manageable or requires significant support, preparation, professional communication and an empathetic environment can help a campus "move forward" after a crisis. In this session, participants will learn varying crisis scenarios that can interrupt or stop school operations. Developmentally appropriate stages of grief and potential reactions from students at all grade levels will be presented as well as follow-up procedures for incidents such as the loss of a home for a student, diagnosis of a life-threatening illness or the loss of a student or staff member through natural causes, accidental loss, or suicide. Parent and community communications best practices and examples will help return the campus when the unthinkable happens.
