My Middle/High School Students Can't Read. Now What??? (grades 6-12)




The ability to be a fluent & passionate reader is one of the most precious gifts we can give our students. Once students reach middle and high school, the common assumption that they already know how to read is embedded in secondary teachers’ daily practice and instructional approach. Too often, students reach middle and high school still struggling with basic reading principles, which haunts teachers and students alike. In this session, secondary teachers will have the opportunity to learn some of the foundational reading principles needed to support students who are several grades below reading level. We will unpack the standards to understand the vertical alignment of teaching reading, build an understanding of fluency, word recognition, spelling patterns & their implications in reading, how to create confident readers, and explore intervention strategies which will target the key skills readers must have in order to be considered fluent & passionate readers. 

Note: this training was also held in January 2021. If you have already attended, but believe a second attendance would be beneficial, you are welcome to register. 

 

Important Session Information:


Enhanced curriculum co-op members and Comprehensive campuses may attend this training at no additional cost. 

This training will consist of 3, 1-hour Zoom sessions of synchronous learning to provide you with the opportunity to engage with the content & acquire new learning. Following each 1-hour Zoom, attendees will have the opportunity to apply the learning through 1 hour of asynchronous learning. Attending the three hours of synchronous learning and engaging in the three hours of asynchronous application will result in attendees receiving a total of 6 hours of CPE hours for this training.
