Beyond Heroes & Holidays: Promoting Cultural Inclusion in the Classroom

We live in a diverse world. It is critical that multicultural education should help students, parents, teachers and administrators understand and relate to the histories, cultures and
languages of people different from themselves. Ultimately, transforming cultural inclusion to move beyond the traditional focuses of heroes such as MLK and holidays such as Cinco de Mayo.

Important Session Information:

In our increasingly diverse and multicultural society, it’s more important than ever for teachers to incorporate culturally responsive instruction in the classroom -- whether teaching elementary school, middle school or high school students. And the increase of diversity doesn’t only relate to race and ethnicity; it can include students of different religions, economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and language background. This learning experience will provide teachers specific strategies and resources to use to move beyond the typical heroes and holidays we have studied in the past.
