Words, WORDS, WoRdSSS- Word Study in Secondary
Developing Word Consciousness in Secondary Students

We know that building students' word knowledge will help strengthen foundational skills needed for them to become successful and fluent readers and we also know that teaching vocabulary in isolation rarely has lasting benefits. How to reconcile these understandings-- word study. Most secondary RLA teachers were never trained on early literacy (the birthplace of word study) practices so the idea of word study can be daunting. We aim to make practical sense of word study in the secondary classroom in this session. Join us as we explore the idea of developing word consciousness-- a keen interest in and favorable attitude toward words! We will foster meaningful interactions with texts at the word level and develop a better understanding of how traditional vocabulary practices connect to word study, as well as various word study strategies and practices you will be able to implement to strengthen your students' reading skills.
