Spinal Screening Certification

DSHS is responsible for providing a certification training program for spinal screening. The instructor will explain the program, forms, and the most up-to-date research and policy. Participants will learn to examine the students with and without a scoliometer. It is not mandatory for RNs to have the course, but it is mandatory for LVNs and other school employees to take this course every 5 years.

Important Session Information:

School-based spinal screening helps to identify adolescents with abnormal spinal curves and refer them for appropriate follow-ups with their doctors. Screening can detect scoliosis early when the curve is mild and may go unnoticed. Early detection is key to controlling spinal deformities. Participants will be certified to conduct spinal screenings within the school district. Participants will receive an overview of the rules and forms for school spinal screenings in Texas. Participants will also receive updated information on the diagnosis and treatment of spinal problems and abnormalities. This certification is active for five years, when a re-certification course must be taken (any time during that year) for the screener to perform screenings.
