Determining the Meaning of Challenging Behavior




This workshop will provide information needed to understand the purpose of challenging behavior to implement a process of positive behavior supports in early childhood learning environments. 

  • Participants will understand the difference between PBS and traditional discipline approaches.
  • Participants will be able to define forms and function of communication and identify the behavioral mechanisms that contribute to viewing challenging behavior as communicative.
  • Participants will describe methods that may be used to determine the function of challenging behavior.
  • Participants will be able to use interview and observational data to determine the
    communicative function of challenging behavior and develop behavior hypotheses.
