SB 179 and the Texas Model Guide
What Could 80% Look Like?




The 87th legislative session brought changes to expectations for the use of counselor time in our schools. In this overview, we will take a closer look at the bill and partner the new expectations with the Texas Model Guide (5th Ed.). Important Session Information:


SB 179 (from the 87th legislative session) outlined an expectation of how a counselor's time is to be spent in school to the degree of 80% focusing on duties and tasks commensurate with the Texas Model Guide (5th edition). In this briefing, SB 179 will be reviewed and considerations will be shared for examining existing counseling programs as well as making decisions about future program elements. With new proposed rules, this session will explore expectations for school counseling programs in Texas.
