Health Services Overview for School Nurses & School Health Personnel
New School Nurse orientation




Facilitated by a registered nurse, this updated full-day training provides an overview of health services from the school nurse/school health personnel perspective. The training will describe clinic management skills in the school setting. Topics will include: RN and LVN Scope of Practice, health services policy and protocols, resources for health services staff orientation, clinic referral guidelines, resources for confidentiality, blood-borne pathogens, acute and chronic disorder procedures (such as injuries, asthma, diabetes and anaphylaxis), communicable diseases, assessment tips and documentation (IHP & Action Plans) and health services personnel. In addition, numerous other topics that will assist school health personnel will be generated through question and answer opportunities. Laws and other information will be updated as needed.

Important Session Information:


This professional learning opportunity is designed specifically for NEW school nurses to ensure they have the resources, information, and tools to be successful in their role! School Nurses who have been practicing for a few years or less would also benefit from this training. 

Topics will include an overview of legal requirements, standards of practice and competencies for school nurses, supervisory issues, and the school nurse’s role in student achievement, special education, and academic success. Participants will learn state laws and regulations regarding school health; medication regulations; state mandates for immunizations, health assessments and screenings; documentation in school health services; special education; Section 504; FERPA vs HIPAA.
