Assessing Emotional Disturbance in Special Education

School-based psychological evaluations assessing Emotional Disturbance (ED) can be challenging and often lead to various questions during the process. These include questions about the specific language used to identify ED, such as “social maladjustment” or to a “marked degree.” This presentation will review the history and legislation that shaped the current definition of emotional disturbance in special education law. Participants will learn of the characteristics of the condition and different assessments that can be utilized in a holistic evaluation. This workshop examines IDEA requirements for ED eligibility and explores systematic and ethical considerations to help LSSPs and evaluation personnel.
