STAAR Math Redesign, What Now? Day 2: Discourse & Productive Struggle

Learning is most rich and most lasting when students engage, discuss, and develop understanding through struggle and mistakes.” This quote by Jo Boaler (2013) simply states that what is understood is not forgotten. Isn’t that what we, as educators, want for our math students? Yet, often, we bypass student struggle, with the best of intentions. We desire so strongly for our students to succeed, that we frequently do the majority of the thinking for them. Join us in this timely session as we learn how to guide our students’ thinking through struggle and discourse, so they can achieve true understanding and success…which will not only prepare them for the STAAR test, but also for a lifetime of problem-solving and endurance. Let’s make this quote by Robert Tew a reality for our students, “The struggle you’re in today is developing the  strength you need for tomorrow.”

The book, Productive Math Struggle: A 6-Point Action Plan for Fostering Perseverance, by J. SanGiovanni, S. Katt, and K. Dykema will be referenced often in this session.
