First Impressions, Traditions, and Assumptions: Examining Beliefs and Values when Working with All Types of Students

This session will examine the impact of school psychologists' lived experiences on their practice and discuss implications for competency when providing services to a distinct population, defined as a group of people who share a common attribute, trait, or defining characteristic. Participants will examine their own understanding and experience of educational systems and relate that to the daily practice of school psychology. Strategies for mitigating negative impacts and promoting effective systems for all students will be discussed. Be prepared to participate, learn something new about yourself and the systems where you work- and take away tools to make your professional functioning more responsive and effective.
