SPED 101: Foundations of Special Education for School Leaders and Educators

This session provides a practical overview of Special Education basics, including eligibility determination, special education services, the ARD/IEP process, and key considerations for supporting positive student behavior. Participants will develop a clear understanding of legal requirements and effective implementation practices that support students with disabilities. The session also introduces the Rubric of Effective Practices for Administrators, with a focus on identifying instructional and compliance “look-fors” in special education classrooms. Participants will learn how to intentionally connect these look-fors to the T-TESS framework to strengthen observation, feedback, and support for special education teachers. Attendees will leave with actionable tools to improve instructional quality, compliance, and outcomes for students receiving special education services.
