See It, Know It, Do Something: Using Purposeful Monitoring to Drive Reading Success

Strong literacy instruction is more than delivering a lesson — it is ensuring every student is actively processing and mastering the content. In this interactive workshop, K–2 teachers will explore how to embed intentional checks for understanding and structured student response routines into explicit, Science of Reading–aligned instruction.

Participants will learn how to increase opportunities for all students to respond during phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension lessons; how to use structured discourse such as Turn and Talks with accountability; and how to provide immediate corrective feedback when misconceptions arise. Teachers will also examine how to respond in the moment when students do not demonstrate understanding, ensuring instruction remains purposeful and responsive rather than moving forward prematurely.

By the end of the session, teachers will be able to design lessons that move from modeling to meaningful student processing — ensuring active engagement, accurate practice, and stronger literacy outcomes for all learners.
