Counseling as a Related Service - Techniques and Logistics
Considerations in School Counseling/Psychological Services for Children with Emotional Disabilities




This session will focus on the multiple components involved in providing counseling as a related service for students who are receiving special education. The session will cover theoretical foundations, evaluation components to determine eligibility and appropriateness, theoretical foundations, goal setting and progress monitoring, and general techniques and strategies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Participants will review the process for conducting effective evaluations to determine the appropriateness of counseling as a related service. 
  • Participants will practice creating counseling goals derived from assessment data. 
  • Participants will review various theoretical orientations, methods, resources, and activities for counseling in schools. 
  • Participants will identify and reflect upon the legal, ethical and best practices issues related to providing counseling as a related service.

Important Session Information:


Emotional Disability remains one of the most nuanced areas of special education. Dr. Susan Pantle provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating "internalizing" disabilities.
